Radio Echo Sounding of the Greenland Inland Ice
نویسندگان
چکیده
Radio echo sounding has been used for a number of years in the exploration of polar ice such as the inland ice in Greenland and Antarc tica. By means of this technique a number of important glaciological and geophysical parameters may be deter mined. Examples are ice thickness, bedrock topography and structure, stratification patterns which are used for climate and flow patterns studies, and ice velocity measurements. The technique now constitutes a very im portant tool in the investigations of the large polar areas covered by ice. This article describes by way of example the airborne radio echo sounding carried out in Greenland by the Technical University of Denmark (TUD).

Satellite-based radio echo sounding technique is of interest to the Earth science community over Antarctica and Greenland, as well as to the planetary science community for exploring subsurface structures of Mars and Europa. Pioneered by the Mars exploration community using MARSIS radar on board the Mars Express mission, such a technique has demonstrated ice sounding capability down to a few ki...
متن کاملThermal Convection in Ice Sheets: We Look But Do Not See
Thermal convection in the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets has been dismissed on the grounds that radio-echo stratigraphy is undisturbed for long distances. However, the undisturbed stratigraphy lies, for the most part, above the density inversion in polar ice sheets and therefore does not disprove convection. An echo-free zone is widespread below the density inversion, yet nobody has cited t...
متن کاملA New Method for Automatically Tracing Englacial Layers from MCoRDS Data in NW Greenland "2279
Englacial layering reflects ice dynamics within the ice bodies, which improves understanding of ice flow variation, past accumulation rates and vertical flows transferring between the surface and the underlying bedrock. The internal layers can be observed by using Radar Echo Sounding (RES), such as the Multi-channel Coherent Radar Depth Sounder (MCoRDS) used in NASA’s Operation IceBridge (OIB) ...
متن کاملPositive mass balance during the late 20th century on Austfonna, Svalbard, revealed using satellite radar interferometry
Determining whether increasing temperature or precipitation will dominate the cryospheric response to climate change is key to forecasting future sea-level rise. The volume of ice contained in the ice caps and glaciers of the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard is small compared with that of the Greenland or Antarctic ice sheets, but is likely to be affected much more rapidly in the short term by cl...

The recent development of the synthetic aperture imaging radar [Brown and Porcello, 1969; Harger, 1970; Rihaczek, 1969], which generates high-resolution surface imagery from an airborne or spaceborne platform, has generated interest in the scientific community for its use as an all-time all-weather remote sensor to study the earth's solid surface, oceans, and polar regions [Bradic, 1967; Waite ...
